Gelsey Kirkland Ballet presents: The Nutcracker
December 8, 9, 10, 11, and December 15, 16, 17 & 18
“The Nutcracker is a Christmas story rich in symbolism. It is about the journey of a young girl, Marie, through darkness to the light of love. She is guided through fear and darkness by her godfather Drosselmeyer.
The journey is from child to princess and marriage to the ideal prince. It is a journey of hope that comes from a gift on Christmas Eve.
The gift is an ugly doll that cracks hard nuts. None of the other children at the Christmas party find it in the least bit appealingl, but Marie sees beyond the surface ugliness of the Nutcracker to something mysterious and beautiful. Later at midnight that same Christmas night, while all are asleep, Marie is attacked by giant mice led by the Mouse King and in return for her love and trust, the Nutcracker comes to her rescue.
During the battle with the mice it is Marie’s small sacrifice of throwing her shoe at the Mouse King which saves the day. Her hero the Nutcracker has fallen in battle but is brought back to life through her love. He is transformed into a handsome prince and then leads her up the Christmas tree into the land of snow and then beyond into his kingdom.”
